Publishing A Book

publishing a book
How would I go about publishing a book?

I started writing a story that is now roughly over 80,000 words. I really want to get it published and I’ve Googled but have only come across a bunch of websites that led me to realize that getting a book published isn’t easy. If anyone out there has any useful info I would greatly appreciate it.

Well, assuming your book is good, you might want to start by finding an agent. You can publish without an agent, but it’s much harder because editors are much more likely to take seriously a manuscript that is already recommended by a professional. Also a lot of publishing companies don’t accept manuscript submissions that are unsolicited manuscripts, or ones that don’t have an agent to back it up.

An agent is someone who knows editors in publishing companies and knows what different editors are looking for and typically lives in New York. In order to get an agent you need to have a finished manuscript to show them. Agents require something called a query letter, which is kind of like a resume. You can look up on google how to write one. A great book to help you find agents to send your query letters to is Writers’ and Artists’ Yearbook 2010.

It really helps your odds of getting an agent to take you on if you have some professional experience, like having been published in some place like a magazine. If an agent decides to take you on (which don’t get upset if you get rejected because it’s quite risky for agents to take on new authors) then they will go about finding a publishing company for your story, although it could still get rejected by publishers. Basically, its a long, hard process to publish a book, and most authors (even J.K. Rowling and Stephenie Meyer) have faced several rejections before an acceptance.

So, yeah, if you are REALLY serious about publishing your book then, fwi, you’re going to face A LOT of rejection because even great authors faced rejection before getting published. Until the time comes (if it does come) for you to be published keep writing and improving and read a lot. And all of those websites are completely right. It’s anything but easy to get a book published. Another option is to go with self-publishing, which is where, instead of you getting paid for your book, you pay a publishing company to publish a certain number of copies of your book. Usually, though, the only people who read self-published books are the friends and family of the author because bookstores don’t sell them.
